Ian Edmunds, Belper Car Keys

Why Ian does this

Ian retired from his first career and, like a lot of people, found he didn't much fancy sitting still. He'd always been handy, liked a puzzle, and car keys – with their chips, codes and programming – turned out to be a proper one. Six years on, Belper Car Keys is how he keeps busy and keeps useful.

Because it isn't about hitting a number, he can afford to be straight with you. If a repair will do instead of a new key, he'll say. If your car is one of the few he won't touch, he'll tell you that too and point you somewhere better.

What you get

• Ian, every time. No call centre, no subcontractor turning up in a different van.
• A firm price over the phone, before he sets off.
• Proper equipment – key cutting, chip cloning and diagnostic programming all carried in the van.
• Local knowledge. He knows Belper and Amber Valley, so "the car park behind the Lion" means something.
• Proof of ownership checked on every lost-key or lockout job. It protects you as much as anyone.
